  15. <p>A woman's trouble naming animals helps show how the brain works
  16. </p>
  17. <p>     Neurologists and psychologists learned long ago that brain
  18. injuries can be a powerful tool for investigating how human
  19. thought and memory are organized. A case study by two Johns
  20. Hopkins researchers, reported in Nature, is but the latest
  21. example. A 70-year-old retired librarian who suffered such an
  22. injury developed a remarkable symptom: she lost the ability to
  23. name animals, though she could still name other living things,
  24. such as plants, and inanimate objects. Nor could she assign
  25. physical attributes to animals--she could not, for example,
  26. answer the question "What color is an elephant?" Yet she could
  27. answer nonphysical questions, about whether a given animal lived
  28. on land or in the sea, or whether it was normally kept as a pet.
  29. And when shown a picture of, say, a lion with a horse's head,
  30. she could tell right away that the two didn't match.
  31. </p>
  32. <p>     So what does it mean? Evidently, the brain has distinct
  33. systems for classifying different types of objects, and it
  34. stores categories of information, such as physical versus
  35. nonphysical characteristics, in different ways. Moreover, the
  36. study shows that the brain has two classification systems, one
  37. language based and one sight based, and that one can be
  38. destroyed while the other stays intact.
